Absalom's Missing Letters on the Lamplighter Podcast

It was such an honor to be invited to join as a guest on Lamplighter Ministries' podcast, Fastened Like Nails, with Dr. Mark Hamby.

When I worked for Lamplighter as a sales rep at conferences and as staff at the third Master's Guild for Creative Disciplines, as well as when I attended the first two guilds and a writer's apprenticeship weekend, one of the highlights was always the devotionals Dr. Hamby would spring on us.  He seemed to always have something new and interesting that I had never considered out of the Scriptures to talk about with us, whether it was a planned devotion at the Mohonk Mountain House or at breakfast at Panera before a day of selling books at a conference.  One of the things he would emphasize is how God communicates, not just with WHAT Scripture says, but HOW Scriptures says it, through artistry and structure.

So when I came across what seemed to be an intentional teaching tool using a poetic structure in Psalms 9 and 10, I wanted to share it with him to see what he thought, since it was exactly the kind of thing that he had taught me in the past.  I emailed him, and he asked if I would join the podcast one morning to discuss it!

It was so fun to have the conversation with Dr. Hamby and Molly Mayo, and you can tune in wherever Fastened Like Nails is posted.  Here are some links to some of the more common places to listen:

For any visual learners out there, I also wrote a couple blog posts about it, which you can find here.

Feel free to comment with any thoughts about what was discussed!

Audio Theatre Central's 200th Episode

If you know even a little bit about me, you probably know that I love audio drama.  It is one of the absolute best mediums for telling stories, and if you want to know why, the link to the following episode is a good reason why! Any current involvement I have with audio drama is almost entirely due to the inimitable JD Sutter, and incidentally, he is also the one to whom I owe the creation of this website!  JD has graciously had me on as a cohost several times for audio drama reviews and as a contributor to the ATC blog, and with the celebration of the 200th episode, it seemed appropriate to link to it! If you want to know why I love audio drama and why you should too, this episode is probably the most comprehensive answer from the most authoritative people in the space. https://www.audiotheatrecentral.com/2024/06/atc200-milestone-celebration-with-industry-guests.html

Review of Adventures in Odyssey Album 76

Last month, I had the opportunity to join JD Sutter of the Audio Theatre Central podcast to review Adventures in Odyssey Album 76! I grew up listening to Adventures in Odyssey, produced by Focus on the Family, and the writers of these stories played an enormous role in shaping my ideas about what good storytelling is. In this review, we delve into some deeper ethical topics prompted by the episodes in this album, and talk some about character arcs, particularly from the perspective of a Christian audio drama.  Story has a way of teaching lessons and creating role models, regardless of initial intention, and I felt some tension in a few of the characters, which I feel the writers are working towards resolving, that I talked with JD about in this episode.  Hope you enjoy the review!  Click the link below to listen!
